Update: FBI releases statement after reports that suspect in Charlie Kirk shooting has been released

The FBI followed up on earlier claims that a suspect had been arrested following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, announcing late Wednesday that the person described as a “subject” of interest had been released after questioning.

According to RT on September 10, 2025, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the development in a statement on X. “The person in custody has been released after questioning by law enforcement. Our investigation is ongoing and we will continue to release information for the sake of transparency.”

Kirk, 31, was killed by a single gunshot in what investigators believe was a targeted attack on Wednesday. Authorities said the gunman, dressed in dark clothing, fired from a rooftop on the campus from a distance. The bullet struck Kirk in the neck as he was answering questions from the audience from a tent stage, sending hundreds of spectators fleeing in panic.

Patel announced early Wednesday that a suspect was in custody, prompting widespread reports that the gunman had been arrested. Utah Governor Spencer Cox also said, “There is no information that leads us to believe there is a second person involved,” although Utah Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason insisted the investigation remains active.
